About fifteen years ago, I worked in a county position where we had access to police reports and I stumbled upon one in which the perpetrator went into a sex shop about 20 mins before closing, per the report âan apparently intoxicated Hispanic male,â grabbed a sex doll off the shelf and took it into a changing room and âproceeded to use it so that it could not be sold, then fled from the establishment.â It was honestly the funniest thing I had read in a while. Sometimes, the tone of a police report will clearly indicate theyâre not going to do anything about it. Unfortunately, I was not wise enough to think of downloading and saving a copy and lost access to that oneâŚ

I remember when I was working in a bicycle shop some scummy kid stole a bmx from out the back room of the shop. Luckily for me I just caught a glimpse of him as he went out the back door so I grabbed the closest bike, which happened to be a 10k road bike, and gave chase. He was pumping as hard as he could to get away and here's me just cruising along beside him giving him a heckle "is that as fast as you can go? Come one mate I can do this all day! Pick up the pace!". He ended up stopping after a couple miles and handing me the bike. Didn't call the cops, I needed to take the roadie our for a test ride after its service anyway lmao.

Also just never steal from small businesses.
For one, it's a piece of shit thing to do. And secondly, if the owner/relative is there (which is very likely) they will care more about theft. The chance of running into someone who cares about you stealing in Walmart is pretty low. Just steal from big box stores.

When I was 14 I was caught stealing stuff from Walmart with some friends. Stupid stuff like sharpies and nail polish. As we waited in the back for our parents the security guard showed us the video and told us how our behavior gave us away and it was obvious we did something wrong. When our parents got there they dug into us about how disappointed they were and how we were raised better. My mom gave me the silent treatment the whole way home. I felt like shit. That was the last time I stole anything.

u/merryjoanna 4d ago
When I was 19 years old I was dating an absolute lunatic. He was fun at the time. We went to an adult toy store one day in Bangor, Maine. Apparently he decided to steal a glass dildo in the only few minutes I wasn't standing right next to him. As we walked out of the store, the cashier said "hand it over now and I won't call the cops!" I was so confused as he pulled this rainbow colored glass dildo out of his pocket and handed it to the guy. I don't know if I've ever been so embarrassed. We just ran out of the store after that. I guess he wanted to get something for me but didn't have any cash. We didn't last long after that.
It's been almost 20 years since that day and I still think of it once in a while. That guy was a genius when it came to science, especially chemistry. But holy crap was he dumb in so many other ways.

He didn't do or cook meth. At least he didn't while I knew him. We just drank and smoked pot. We didn't get into any other drugs.
When I say he was a genius with chemistry, I say that because we would have discussions about it. He could explain it so much better than the teacher I had in high school. He understood it well enough to explain it in laymen's terms to me. Granted that was almost two decades ago, so I don't remember much of it. I just remember being amazed at his intelligence. And other times, I was amazed at his stupidity.

This happened to me ~20 years ago working in an electronics store in the UK. It was one of those places that tried to expand it's range to include "basically everything" (Maplin Electronics for anyone in the UK who cares).
We had DJ equipment in part of the store, and a pair of druggies came in, picked up a huge speaker between two of them, walked out the door, and walked it 500metres up the street to the pawn shop. We stood behind them in the queue at the pawn shop, somehow they didn't notice us till they were getting served.
Once they were trying to trade it in they clocked us standing behind them and did a runner. One of these geniuses left his backpack on the counter, and when police arrived and searched it they found the dudes methadone prescription bottle inside it with his full name and address on it.

People are too stupid to understand that stealing is NOT a victimless crime.... We all pay for thieves. Yes they have insurances, but who pays these insurances at the end of the day? Customers. It's always the customers.
In the case of small business owners, they'll often absorb the losses instead of filing a claim with their insurance company. This shit hurts our communities too, because we need and love these small businesses.

u/quantinuum 4d ago
I HATE how many times Iâve seen friends âcollectingâ stuff they steal from local pubs. Pint glasses, decorations⌠And good-hearted people at that. Itâs like some people have the âstealing from small businessâ action bypassing their morals.
→ More replies (8)18
u/Memelurker99 4d ago
Fuck stealing actual decorations from pubs, but for the most part every pub I've ever worked in received most pint glasses for free from their beer suppliers. In two that I worked in, ive seen people ask the owners to take a glass home and be told yes without paying, and one of those places, another night the boss handed out glasses one evening. Every bar worker I know has half a dozen pint glasses at home because there were boxes upon boxes of glasses in the storage in the back taking up space.
Maybe this is just a thing in the west coast fo scotland but anybody I've worked with who's served in bars for over a year doesn't care about pint glasses getting stolen, even some of the places got free gin bowls that they didn't mind getting stolen either because they got so many free ones. Wine and prosecco glasses are a whole different breed though, if you steal those, fuck you

u/Plumb789 4d ago
Speaking as a shop owner of thirty years, I LOVE this woman. Thereâs a persistent myth that shoplifting is a âvictimless crimeâ, and that all losses are insured. There is NO SUCH THING AS INSURANCE AGAINST SHOPLIFTING. This is because no insurer would cover the loss of items from a building where the public are allowed to freely access. Itâs as simple as that.
Some shopkeepers are put out of business by shoplifting. And that doesnât just mean theyâve lost their livelihood: often all their savings, and even the equity of their home-is in their business. Shoplifting from a small business is shit-and shoplifters from a small business are scum.

Yup. Especially for a small business, even the small thefts add up. They might as well be taking from your wallet directly each time they steal.
8
u/Plumb789 4d ago edited 4d ago
Absolutely! And, when you are a small shop you can get deliberately targeted because (in the U.K., anyway, where I am) the police donât take it seriously.
If you are a woman alone (which I was), what are you supposed to do against people who outnumber you and bully you? Luckily, what I sold (high-class womenswear) wasnât targeted by male thieves. Also, I can be fairly formidable myself, so I was able to resist being bullied. One time, a very large, very aggressive woman faced up to me and said âI wouldnât mess with me! You donât know what Iâm capable of!â
I just laughed at her and said âoh, Iâm sure youâre a very capable person. Youâre just not capable of taking anything off me.â And she didnât. A customer in the background said sheâd never felt so scared in her life, but frankly, after a lifetime in retail, Iâd seen worse. I just learned how to pick my battles-like the lady in this video.

I want to know how this all went down. Most small business boutiques have one MAYBE two employees on shift. I want to know if this owner had time to lockup, chase the lady, pay the bus fare, have a discussion about payment, record then call the cops. I'm impressed!

Or her business is successful enough to have more staff. Who knows how long she's been running it or how successful her store is.

People forget that small businesses don't have alot of security, but they also dont have to have policies saying not to engage a thief. Ya'll need to remember that. It hits the small businesses the worst when these things happen. Keep your theft to the big corps....or better yet, not at all.
