And the excruciating "Well, what do I do now?" being trapped on the bus for the duration.

It's understandable, I'd say, that someone will act weird in a case like that. It's a weird situation, not really one life gives someone much at all.

343

u/SmallLetter 4d ago

Sometimes you end up in a weird situation because life is weird. Sometimes you end up in a weird situation because you're an idiot who thought stealing from an erotic shop was a good idea.

About fifteen years ago, I worked in a county position where we had access to police reports and I stumbled upon one in which the perpetrator went into a sex shop about 20 mins before closing, per the report “an apparently intoxicated Hispanic male,” grabbed a sex doll off the shelf and took it into a changing room and “proceeded to use it so that it could not be sold, then fled from the establishment.” It was honestly the funniest thing I had read in a while. Sometimes, the tone of a police report will clearly indicate they’re not going to do anything about it. Unfortunately, I was not wise enough to think of downloading and saving a copy and lost access to that one…

20

u/whyyoudeletemereddit 4d ago

Don’t you use police reports in civil lawsuits as well? Even if the police aren’t gonna do anything the business can still try to get there money back.

I remember when I was working in a bicycle shop some scummy kid stole a bmx from out the back room of the shop. Luckily for me I just caught a glimpse of him as he went out the back door so I grabbed the closest bike, which happened to be a 10k road bike, and gave chase. He was pumping as hard as he could to get away and here's me just cruising along beside him giving him a heckle "is that as fast as you can go? Come one mate I can do this all day! Pick up the pace!". He ended up stopping after a couple miles and handing me the bike. Didn't call the cops, I needed to take the roadie our for a test ride after its service anyway lmao.

159

u/SuperFLEB 4d ago

I suppose it's easy enough to overlook, but it's got to feel pretty silly in hindsight to realize you just stole from a place that sells the way to chase you. Kind of like trying to stick up a gun store.

336

u/TeeBek 4d ago

Rule of thumb, never steal from someone who looks crazy. She's gotta be crazy if she thinks her eyes look good.

156

u/MentlPopcorn 4d ago

Also just never steal from small businesses.

For one, it's a piece of shit thing to do. And secondly, if the owner/relative is there (which is very likely) they will care more about theft. The chance of running into someone who cares about you stealing in Walmart is pretty low. Just steal from big box stores.

Thief: brings the crazy (why steal erotic books?)

Business lady: uno reverso, bitch

329

u/KrustenStewart 4d ago

It wasn’t erotic books, pretty sure it was some sort of dress up a lingerie type of outfit. I have some experience with friends who did similar things, they needed to go make some money that night but needed an outfit first, so they would steal club wear from the local sex shop.

109

u/Pop_Tart_Eater 4d ago

Were your friends prostitutes?

232

u/Endketsu 4d ago

They were nuns obviously, who else would steal club wear at sex shop

With the pay scales that teachers earn it wouldn’t be surprising. Have to pay the electric bill somehow.

7

u/Extaupin 4d ago

That would make such a good distopia character: "local teacher forced to become a prostitue as school isn't able to pay her more than her rent". Like, you know, the sidekick that finally convince the main character to burn down the system.

1.1k

u/brockwallace 4d ago edited 4d ago

Honestly If I ever stole something, got caught, and then this happened - I'd never steel again. Ever.

Even skip the arresting part. Its just a whole ass 20 minute buss ride with everyone like "yeee you fucked up".

This is like grind your teeth, face palm embarrassing, while lying in bed trying to sleep 25 years later kinda shit. And you can totally see it in her face too.

Edit, i didn't even realise it was a sex toy shop, like this is worse case senario stuff lmao.

254

u/a7iiiShooter 4d ago edited 4d ago

Even when these don’t go viral on a national level, many go viral on a local level. All it takes is 1 person that knows her to see it and it’ll spread to her entire circle. Eventually she’ll have several people she knows her ask about it. Anyone she has problems with (I bet she has many) will probably bring it up to talk shit. That’s where the true embarrassment comes from.

When I was 14 I was caught stealing stuff from Walmart with some friends. Stupid stuff like sharpies and nail polish. As we waited in the back for our parents the security guard showed us the video and told us how our behavior gave us away and it was obvious we did something wrong. When our parents got there they dug into us about how disappointed they were and how we were raised better. My mom gave me the silent treatment the whole way home. I felt like shit. That was the last time I stole anything.

53

u/merryjoanna 4d ago

When I was 19 years old I was dating an absolute lunatic. He was fun at the time. We went to an adult toy store one day in Bangor, Maine. Apparently he decided to steal a glass dildo in the only few minutes I wasn't standing right next to him. As we walked out of the store, the cashier said "hand it over now and I won't call the cops!" I was so confused as he pulled this rainbow colored glass dildo out of his pocket and handed it to the guy. I don't know if I've ever been so embarrassed. We just ran out of the store after that. I guess he wanted to get something for me but didn't have any cash. We didn't last long after that.

It's been almost 20 years since that day and I still think of it once in a while. That guy was a genius when it came to science, especially chemistry. But holy crap was he dumb in so many other ways.

18

u/Megneous 4d ago

That guy was a genius when it came to science, especially chemistry.

A regular Heisenberg.

7

u/merryjoanna 4d ago

He didn't do or cook meth. At least he didn't while I knew him. We just drank and smoked pot. We didn't get into any other drugs.

When I say he was a genius with chemistry, I say that because we would have discussions about it. He could explain it so much better than the teacher I had in high school. He understood it well enough to explain it in laymen's terms to me. Granted that was almost two decades ago, so I don't remember much of it. I just remember being amazed at his intelligence. And other times, I was amazed at his stupidity.

49

Some employee at a CVS or Walgreens recorded a video of a shoplifter going out to their car in the parking lot.

So, this being the US, the shoplifter sprayed him with bear spray (pepper spray).

So, this being the US, he pulled out a gun and shot her.

24

u/Comprehensive-Fun47 4d ago

It is so not worth it to chase a shoplifter, especially if you work for CVS! That’s not your shit they’re stealing! Don’t risk your life for a company who does not care about you.

I’m unclear from your anecdote though if the employee shot the shoplifter or got shot after getting bear sprayed.

This happened to me ~20 years ago working in an electronics store in the UK. It was one of those places that tried to expand it's range to include "basically everything" (Maplin Electronics for anyone in the UK who cares).

We had DJ equipment in part of the store, and a pair of druggies came in, picked up a huge speaker between two of them, walked out the door, and walked it 500metres up the street to the pawn shop. We stood behind them in the queue at the pawn shop, somehow they didn't notice us till they were getting served.

Once they were trying to trade it in they clocked us standing behind them and did a runner. One of these geniuses left his backpack on the counter, and when police arrived and searched it they found the dudes methadone prescription bottle inside it with his full name and address on it.

Or hitting your breaking point. Some retail shops deal with an insane amount of theft.

On one hand, it seems absolutely ridiculous to follow someone who stole from you to their home. On the other hand, it may be a genius move because it shows that they won't put up with shoplifting. Gotta admire her dedication to loss prevention lol

Why are comments supporting a thief?

Maybe some people are worried that it'll be them one day.

People are too stupid to understand that stealing is NOT a victimless crime.... We all pay for thieves. Yes they have insurances, but who pays these insurances at the end of the day? Customers. It's always the customers.

In the case of small business owners, they'll often absorb the losses instead of filing a claim with their insurance company. This shit hurts our communities too, because we need and love these small businesses.

I HATE how many times I’ve seen friends “collecting” stuff they steal from local pubs. Pint glasses, decorations… And good-hearted people at that. It’s like some people have the “stealing from small business” action bypassing their morals.

u/Memelurker99 4d ago

Fuck stealing actual decorations from pubs, but for the most part every pub I've ever worked in received most pint glasses for free from their beer suppliers. In two that I worked in, ive seen people ask the owners to take a glass home and be told yes without paying, and one of those places, another night the boss handed out glasses one evening. Every bar worker I know has half a dozen pint glasses at home because there were boxes upon boxes of glasses in the storage in the back taking up space.

Maybe this is just a thing in the west coast fo scotland but anybody I've worked with who's served in bars for over a year doesn't care about pint glasses getting stolen, even some of the places got free gin bowls that they didn't mind getting stolen either because they got so many free ones. Wine and prosecco glasses are a whole different breed though, if you steal those, fuck you

I'm in the South West of England and same here. We get an unreasonable number of branded glasses from brewers — like 20x more than you could ever need. I think they see it as good advertising if their logo ends up in people's homes.

Yes they have insurances, but who pays these insurances at the end of the day?

Next up, go find a thread where people are excusing rioters on "But they have insurance!", and missing that they usually have civil unrest exceptions.

Speaking as a shop owner of thirty years, I LOVE this woman. There’s a persistent myth that shoplifting is a “victimless crime”, and that all losses are insured. There is NO SUCH THING AS INSURANCE AGAINST SHOPLIFTING. This is because no insurer would cover the loss of items from a building where the public are allowed to freely access. It’s as simple as that.

Some shopkeepers are put out of business by shoplifting. And that doesn’t just mean they’ve lost their livelihood: often all their savings, and even the equity of their home-is in their business. Shoplifting from a small business is shit-and shoplifters from a small business are scum.

Yup. Especially for a small business, even the small thefts add up. They might as well be taking from your wallet directly each time they steal.

Absolutely! And, when you are a small shop you can get deliberately targeted because (in the U.K., anyway, where I am) the police don’t take it seriously.

If you are a woman alone (which I was), what are you supposed to do against people who outnumber you and bully you? Luckily, what I sold (high-class womenswear) wasn’t targeted by male thieves. Also, I can be fairly formidable myself, so I was able to resist being bullied. One time, a very large, very aggressive woman faced up to me and said “I wouldn’t mess with me! You don’t know what I’m capable of!”

I just laughed at her and said “oh, I’m sure you’re a very capable person. You’re just not capable of taking anything off me.” And she didn’t. A customer in the background said she’d never felt so scared in her life, but frankly, after a lifetime in retail, I’d seen worse. I just learned how to pick my battles-like the lady in this video.

I want to know how this all went down. Most small business boutiques have one MAYBE two employees on shift. I want to know if this owner had time to lockup, chase the lady, pay the bus fare, have a discussion about payment, record then call the cops. I'm impressed!

12

u/TheMilkmanCome 4d ago

That or she asked the other employee to watch the store while she left. Or she doesn’t run a conventional storefront

u/thebooksmith 4d ago

Or her business is successful enough to have more staff. Who knows how long she's been running it or how successful her store is.

u/Antarkian 4d ago

People forget that small businesses don't have alot of security, but they also dont have to have policies saying not to engage a thief. Ya'll need to remember that. It hits the small businesses the worst when these things happen. Keep your theft to the big corps....or better yet, not at all.
